Dr. Pumtiwitt McCarthy is Interim Chair and Associate Professor in the Chemistry Department of Morgan State University and currently serves as Alternate Councilor for the CARB Technical Division of the American Chemical Society. She is a Past Chair of the Maryland section of the American Chemical Society (2020). Dr. McCarthy has established an interdisciplinary research program that investigates carbohydrate-producing enzymes from Neisseria meningitidis for the development of improved vaccines and the production of new bio-based tools for remediation of heavy metals in water. Her research work has been funded externally by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and other internal funding sources. Dr. McCarthy has submitted one patent application and has published peer-reviewed articles in high impact journals including Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Biomolecules and Vaccines. She has been a proposal reviewer for the NIH and NSF. Dr. McCarthy is a Review Board member on the Editorial Board of the journal Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences-Glycosciences. Dr. McCarthy is a member of the Reviewer Board for the journal Vaccines and has reviewed manuscripts for many journals. During her time at Morgan, Dr. McCarthy has mentored 38 students (from high school through Ph.D. level) in research. She joined Morgan State University as an Assistant Professor in 2013,  became an Associate Professor in 2019 and Interim Chairperson in 2021.  Dr. McCarthy received her B.S. in Biochemistry from Rowan University and obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Delaware.  She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research at the FDA on the campus of the NIH from 2009-2013 with support from ORISE and NIH PRAT fellowships.
